INTRODUCTORY NOTE

The boomerang LD

After flying for twenty thousand years, the boomerang has landed in the twentieth century and has been perfected to such an extent that its performance in terms of distance, resulting in absolute terms, the most extraordinary of all the tools to launch.

On May 1, 1999 to close worthily century and millennium, was made a legendary record, still unbeatable, from the largest boomerang-men of all time, the Swiss Manuel Schutz, who has launched a BLD of its construction, the voyager, the prodigious distance of 238m.

The trend had begun in the 70s when they were exceeded 100 meters from an English pioneer H. Schmidt and later progressed without interruption until in 1998 a remarkable performance by the Australian D. Schummy which reaches 174 meters with BLD he himself realized. The following year M. Schutz was cited for outstanding performance.

Currently, this sport has several clubs in France, Germany and the United States.


My LD

I realized LD experiencing the shapes and different materials, from PVC to polycarbonate and all technical fibers, including Kevlar and carbon-glass sandwich. Obviously the most suitable material is carbon, which can be managed by using additional weights or together with fiber glass if you prefer the distributed mass. The sheets of carbon have been made with different fabrics alternating and oriented to obtain an isotropic condition, however, using unidirectional glass fibers on some LD. Different epoxy matrices have been widely tested, always with the heat treatment recommended by the manufacturer.

A proper grinding and perfected in the field distinguishes the boomerang high performance from those made with the molds that they do not need to change.

I realized, over the years, a number of molds that I have used both with glass fibers that Kevlar, for the need to have identical geometries initially in a good number of specimens; the practical results achieved, even without grinding, were actually valid. I have also used, with excellent results, even a technical type LAP-JOINT with ribbons of unidirectional glass and soul of lightening, grinding with final reference LD glass fiber 117.

In general, the boomerang presented are divided into two types: LD and LD performance with less critical profiles that can be used more easily.

In fact, the trajectory of an LD high performance is programmed by its geometry, from the profiles and dihedral wing, from the distribution of the masses and finally by the throw technique. All these factors may discourage the neophyte even permanently, so you must not provoke an LD characteristics, with a "launch window" wider. Personally I have never competed, despite the training and the availability of adequate LD, especially because normally you have to reach far away places.
